On feeling low about writing
This is from an email I sent during December 2021, when coronavirus had taken a deep breath and was really going for it again.
Fed up and and tired? That's just fine.
It's December. It's cold (where I am). And yet the world is, somehow, on fire.
If you feel a bit overwhelmed, or low, or as though all of your thousands of words (maybe hundreds of thousands of words) aren't worth the paper they are written on, then please hear this:
You are doing just fine.
It's normal for the way you feel about your writing to change.
It can be harder to be positive in the world we're inhabiting right now.
On the one hand, Omicron is bringing anxiety and worry.
On the other hand, we live in a world where every piece of media is telling you you should be succeeding! and partying! and endlessly enjoying the company of others! while achieving your dreams!
It's perfectly understandable if you're not feeling your writing right now.
Maybe forgive yourself.
Maybe allow yourself kindness - your own, and that of others towards you, when they tell you you'll get there.
Maybe trust that this thing that you love doing will wait for you.
